Templetogher Mill
Templetogher, 'the Church of the Pass', is the ancient
seat of Christianity in the parish. The earliest church
outline can still be seen in Templetogher. Nearby is St.
Patrick's Well, a popular pilgrimage place until recent
times. Tradition says that St. Patrick passed this way
in the fifth century. |

Glinsk Castle
Reputed to be the last castle built in this country,
stands as an impressive reminder of the architectural
skills and styles of the Norman era.
This Castle was the principal residence of Mac David
Burke, lord of Clonconway. It was built in the mid 17th
century on the site of an earlier Castle. |

Dunmore Castle
Built by de Bermingham about 1225, but was burned by the
sons of the kings of Connacht in 1249, by Fichra O'Flynn
in 1284 and by Rory O'Connor in 1315. The present castle
was built after the last burning. It is a massive
rectangular tower of four storeys situated on a motte
with the remains of a fortifying wall around it.

Augustinian Friary
Located near the centre of the town, was founded for the
Augustinian friars by Walter de Birmingham, Lord Baron
of Athenry, in 1425. There is a fine and decorative 15th
century west doorway.
Lord Athenry saved the monastery from suppression in
1541, but in 1574 John Burke-Fitzthomas seized it. As
late as 1641 there were still a prior and 30 friars in
the community. |

Oran Round Tower
Towers were a central part of any defensive system.
Usually round, with living quarters at the upper levels.
Round towers were also used as part of a town wall. |

Lough key Forest Park
Situated between Boyle and Carrick On Shannon in
county Roscommon is about a half an hours drive from Williamstown and
offers a range of activities like fishing, boating, walking and
picnicking.
